Second, attention to the exertive symptoms narrows with increase in physical load (ie, from a distributed mode to a symptom-focused mode) Third, perceptions of effort are influenced by both physical and social environmental conditions And finally, exercise participants who are relatively accustomed to enduring feelings of physical discomfort appear more motivated to tolerate and sustain effort, although this effect appears to be task-specific The dispositional characteristics associated with perceived effort and effort tolerance were found to be inconsistent, partially because of measurement problems and lack of sound theory to support such relationships Strategies for coping with physical effort can take two forms: active and passive Active coping strategies classified as internal (associative) or external (dissociative) to the performer were reviewed The available research suggests that dissociative strategies of coping with effort are more salient under low physical load.
