These visual hints often make even mundane analyses more compelling. A KPI as a quantifiable value (such as Strong Buy or Strong Sell) used to assess a business s performance. From an Analysis Services standpoint, a KPI is a set of computations performed using MDX. These computations are associated with additional information indicating how their results are to be displayed. When the computations determine a company s stock is a Strong Buy, display that bursting red thermometer. Although visual in nature, a KPI is a server-side object. This means that the company web site developed in C# and ASP.NET would get the same thermometer displayed as the company s annual report, which was put together with Microsoft Word and VB .NET. There is a single version of the KPI on the server, and it is accessible to different clients (such as ASP .NET or Microsoft Office).

Form elements are classes that represent HTML controls. These classes handle rendering the controls with the appropriate metadata and attributes and then validating and filtering the data.

Within an Analysis Services project, you can work with KPIs by selecting the Cube Designer s KPIs tab.

For example, software has a fixed cost and costs next to nothing to manufacture (potentially high profitability). A game console sells at cost or near cost for competitive reasons, and hence has a low profitability. For the purposes of simplicity, profitability is a measure of the sales compared to cost. We will name this KPI Profitability. A KPI is associated with all measure groups or a specific measure group. Potentially, there could be measure groups for sales, marketing, and human resources. These measure groups are set up in advance and are just categorizations of measures targeted to a specific audience (such as the accounting department or the human resources department). This example will be associated with all measure groups, so we choose <All> from the Associated Measure Group drop-down list.
