The simplest way to deal with the hierarchical nature of XML data is to ignore it. In other words, you can bind the XML data source directly to an ordinary grid control such as the GridView. Now that users have a way of registering on the system, we must allow them to log in to their account. We do that by adding a new action to the account controller, which we will call login. In 3 we looked at how to authenticate using Zend_Auth (see Listing 3-5). We will now implement this functionality. The basic algorithm for the login action is as follows: 1. Display the login form. 2. If the user submits the form, try to authenticate them with Zend_Auth. 3. If they successfully authenticate, write their identity to the session and redirect them to their account home page (or to the protected page they originally requested). 4. If their authentication attempt was unsuccessful, display the login form again, indicating that an error occurred. In addition to this, we also want to make use of our logging capabilities. We will make a log entry for both successful and unsuccessful login attempts.

Now, when you run the page, the XmlDataSource will extract the data from the SuperProProductList.xml file, provide it to the GridView as an XmlDocument object, and call DataBind(). However, this approach has a catch. As explained earlier, the XmlDocument.Nodes collection contains only the first level of nodes. Each node can contain nested nodes through its own XmlNode.Nodes collection. However, the XmlDataSource doesn t take this into account. It walks over the upper level of XmlNode objects, and as a result you ll see only the top level of elements. In this example, that means you ll see a row for each <Product> element, complete with all the attribute information, as shown in Figure 19-11. You won t see inner text content or nested elements, such as the <Price> element.
